How To Turn Training Into Usable Skills
About 10 years ago I decided I wanted to learn how to play golf. I bought some clubs and several videos on how to do everything from drive to putt. I watched all of the videos and learned a ton of things I should do to become a good golfer. But a question – how many skills did I develop just watching those videos?
You’re right: zero. All I got was the information I’d need to be good at golf. What’s next? Right again, practice, practice and more practice to develop skills.
Selling is no different. If you watch videos on JVTN®, attend a class, read this blog but don’t practice – you aren’t improving your skills, you’re just gaining knowledge. Whether it’s selling cars or playing golf, if you want to do it well, you’re going to need to practice.
I used to work with a guy who was a semi-pro wanna-be golfer. He played 3 times a week, up at 5 and on the course. He’d spend his off time at the range, watching tournaments and he was always talking to anyone who would listen about his swing or when he’d play next. He was a great golfer but just an average salesperson.
He was always disappointed with himself in sales. He got stuck in average in sales because he didn’t practice his “selling” skills (his profession) like he did his “golf” skills
(his hobby).
