Started with zero experience…
“Joe, how many units can someone
realistically sell in today’s market?”
When I got out of the Army, I started selling cars with zero experience. My first 5 years as an 8 car guy, I never met and rarely heard of anyone selling more than 12 or 15.
If we did hear about someone selling more than that, we could easily explain that their numbers were rigged.
You’ve heard these…
“You know how he sells 20?” followed by standard excuses; “I could too, if I played golf with the owner,” or “Who wouldn’t, if they got all the house deals,” and “If that many people ask for him, there’s something fishy going on” – just add in the excuses your huddle uses.
Too often we confuse working long and hard to sell something, with trying to be ‘good’. We also confuse how long someone has been selling with being ‘good’.
A few years ago in class, I had a guy who’d been selling cars for 40 years and had been taught by the other underachievers to believe that his 8-12 was as good as he could do.
On the second day of our sales class, as we were going around the room talking about what people learned that would help them sell more, this guy literally cried and said, “I’ve wasted 40 years that I could have been selling 20, 30 or 50 cars a month, if I had just been taught what you cover in this sales workshop.”
It’s easy to say, “I don’t believe 8 out of 10 people I talk to came to buy,” or that, “7 out of 8 buy within a week.”
The problem: It’s true, whether you like it or not. When a 10 car guy talks to 3 a day, 15 a week and 60 a month, 80% (48) came to buy.
If you don’t believe it, it doesn’t matter, because it’s the truth.
To start selling more, let’s talk about why 80% of all salespeople miss so many easy sales.
And let’s talk about what everyone can do, starting today, to sell more cars, earn more money and become high achievers.
